Nation first 850 Mw Hydel project start on River Chenab
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh kick to start work on 850 megawatt hydro-electric project on the River Chenab as part of efforts to tap the hydroelectric potential in Jammu and Kashmir.
The 850 MW Ratle project, which is the nation's first hydroelectric project that was bid out through tariff based international competitive bidding, will cost Rs 5,500 crore, Singh said laying foundation stone of the project.
The project was awarded to GVK Power which offered the lowest tariff for generating power.
"GVK Power effort will be made to complete the project by its scheduled deadline of February 2018,"
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said adding electricity generated from this project will bring prosperity to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and other Indian state also
Despite power generation in the state rising to 1,664 MW, Jammu and Kashmir continues to be a power deficit state, he said announcing supply of 150 MW of electricity from Central pool to the state
Concrete Gravity Dam
The dam is located near Drabshala village. The waterway is provided with five orifice spillways with crest El. 985.00 m and one upper level overflow spillway with crest level El. 1012.50 m.

- Design Flood 13,814 m³/s
- Maximum Reservoir Level (MRL) El 1029.00 m
- Full Reservoir Level (FRL) El 1029.00 m
